Topeka's King of Tacos | Episode 7 - La Casita

La Casita Brings a Different Take on Al Pastor to Topeka

A SE 6th Street Taco Stop with a Unique Al Pastor and Lengua

For Episode 7 of King of Tacos, we visited La Casita, located at 3032 SE 6th St, Topeka, KS 66607. As we continue our search for the best taco in Topeka, we're finding that every stop brings something a little different to the table.

At La Casita, that difference showed up right away with their al pastor.

The seasoning was noticeably different from other al pastor we've tried around Topeka, giving the taco a nice kick and a flavor that stood apart from the competition.

We also got the opportunity to try something new during our taco journey: lengua.

With another new taco added to our list and a unique take on al pastor to consider, La Casita has officially joined the competition for the King of Tacos crown.

ABOUT THE KING OF TACOS SERIES

The King of Tacos series takes Team Ringgold around Topeka, Kansas, in search of the best taco in town. Each episode features a different local restaurant or food truck and gives us a chance to try their tacos while highlighting the local businesses that make our community special.

So far, we've discovered everything from steak tacos and carne asada to pork, chorizo, Birria, al pastor, and now lengua.

Every stop has brought something different, which is exactly what makes the search so much fun.

At Team Ringgold, we believe getting to know a community means more than knowing its neighborhoods and housing market. Local restaurants, food trucks, small businesses, and longtime establishments all contribute to what makes Topeka feel like home.

That's one of the reasons we enjoy getting out into the community for King of Tacos.

EPISODE 7: WHY WE CHOSE LA CASITA

When you're searching for the best tacos in Topeka, you want to find restaurants that offer something memorable.

La Casita gave us that opportunity with an al pastor that didn't taste quite like the other al pastor tacos we've tried around town.

Al pastor is a taco that can vary significantly from one restaurant to another. The seasoning, preparation, and balance of spices can completely change the flavor.

That's exactly what we experienced at La Casita.

Their version brought a little more heat and a different combination of spices than some of the other al pastor we've encountered during our King of Tacos journey.

And sometimes, that's what makes a taco stand out.

THE AL PASTOR BROUGHT A NICE KICK

Every King of Tacos episode has something that makes us stop and compare it to the tacos we've already tried.

At La Casita, that was the al pastor.

The seasoning was different from other al pastor we've had in Topeka, and that difference gave the taco a nice kick.

It's always interesting to see how different restaurants approach the same taco. Even when you're ordering something familiar, you can end up with a completely different experience depending on where you go.

La Casita's al pastor added another unique version to our growing list of contenders.

If you're looking for al pastor tacos in Topeka, this is one version worth trying for yourself.

WE FINALLY GOT TO TRY LENGUA

The al pastor may have been the standout, but La Casita also gave us the opportunity to try something we'd been looking forward to adding to the series: lengua.

Lengua, or beef tongue, is a traditional taco filling that can be found at Mexican restaurants and taco shops. For people who haven't tried it before, the name alone can be enough to make it a little intimidating.

But that's part of what makes a series like King of Tacos fun.

We're not just sticking with the tacos we already know we like. We're trying different meats, flavors, seasonings, and preparations along the way.

La Casita gave us another chance to step outside the usual taco choices and add lengua to our King of Tacos experience.

EVERY TACO SHOP HAS ITS OWN STYLE

One thing we've learned during the King of Tacos series is that there isn't just one way to make a great taco.

Two restaurants can serve the same type of taco and produce completely different flavors.

That's especially true with al pastor.

At La Casita, the seasoning gave their al pastor a little more kick than some of the other versions we've tried around Topeka. It wasn't simply another al pastor taco. It had its own personality.

That's what we're looking for during this series.

We're trying to find the taco that stands out.

EXPLORING TOPEKA ONE TACO AT A TIME

Our stop at 3032 SE 6th St gave us another opportunity to visit a local business, try something new, and add another contender to our growing list.

There are so many different restaurants and taco spots throughout Topeka, and each one has its own story and its own approach to Mexican food.

You don't have to travel far to discover something new.

Sometimes, the next great taco is right around the corner.

TOPEKA'S TACO COMPETITION CONTINUES

Seven episodes into our search for the King of Tacos, the competition continues to grow.

Vuelve a la Vida impressed us with its steak taco. Rosi's Food brought us chopped carne asada and standout elote. Zoila's Cafe gave us a memorable pork taco and green sauce. Mexicali brought flavorful Birria tacos. El Centenario gave us excellent al pastor and a standout chorizo taco. El Zocalo surprised us with Birria tacos, a flavorful consommé, Birria eggrolls, and Birria ramen.

Now La Casita joins the competition with an al pastor that brings a unique kick and gives us another opportunity to try lengua.

And we're still not finished.

There are plenty more taco spots around Topeka waiting to be explored.

If you've tried La Casita, we'd love to know what you think. Is their al pastor one of the best in Topeka? And if you've never tried lengua, would you give it a shot?
